The Energy Innovation Agency (The Agency) is excited to announce a new collaboration between Verv and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) on a project aimed at significantly improving the energy efficiency and sustainability at Trafford General Hospital. The project will focus on providing the hospital with comprehensive insights into the energy consumption and performance of its air conditioning (AC) units, many of which operate independently of the hospital's existing Building Management Systems (BMS).

Trafford General Hospital, a vital part of MFT, currently operates over 140 AC units, including single split and variable refrigerant volume (VRV) systems from various manufacturers. These systems have previously functioned in isolation, with little oversight or intelligence to manage their energy use effectively. As a result, there is a significant opportunity to reduce energy waste, optimise performance, and lower operational costs by integrating intelligent monitoring into these existing systems.

The project, which is part-funded through the Energy Accelerator for Non-Domestic Buildings (an Innovation Accelerator programme) with funding secured from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) will introduce Verv's energy monitoring solution to track the performance of each AC unit in real-time & is expected to identify energy wastage from the connected AC assets with a cumulative weekly total of 409 kWh. This solution will enable MFT to capture granular data on energy consumption, efficiency, and patterns of use, providing valuable insights that can help optimise the operation of the AC units and reduce overall energy consumption.

Our partnership with the Energy Innovation Agency marks a significant step forward in leveraging innovative technology to improve energy efficiency. By harnessing real-time insights into AC energy consumption, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is taking a proactive approach to decarbonising Trafford General Hospital — a powerful example of positive action towards a more sustainable NHS.
